Get your Daily D!

Updated: Aug 3

As many of my nutrition clients know, Vitamin D is one of the few supplements I frequently recommend!

Why Is Vitamin D Important?

Vitamin D plays several crucial roles in the body. It helps maintain bone mass, promotes calcium absorption, and protects against injuries. Additionally, it can alleviate musculoskeletal pain.

Your immune system also significantly benefits from optimal vitamin D levels, as it helps defend against viruses and supports the immune system.

Vitamin D is also vital for brain health. Research indicates that it can improve cognitive function by reducing damage caused by free radicals. This not only enhances current brain activity but also reduces the risk of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, which is strongly linked to decreased levels of vitamin D.

What About Deficiency?

Getting enough vitamin D is essential, yet many people fall short. Experts estimate that over one billion people worldwide are deficient in this vitamin. A simple blood test can determine your vitamin D levels.

Why Are We So Deficient?

Our bodies produce Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight but, depending on where in the world you live, it's often not possible to get sun exposure year round. When we venture into the sun, we often wear sunscreen to protect against skin cancer or avoid being out when the sun is strongest. Some food sources can help though:

  • Fatty fish like salmon or mackerel are great Vitamin D sources

  • Egg yolk

  • Mushrooms

  • Fortified Foods - often OJ, milk and cereal have Vitamin D added to them

A Healthy Start

When the sun is shining, it's a great idea to start your day with 10-15 minutes outdoors with the sun on your skin. Following that with a mushroom omelette or scrambled egg and smoked salmon breakfast gives you a head start in making this crucial vitamin.
